Want to stage or simply refresh your home, but don’t know how? Sometimes, it’s the little touches you overlook that can make the biggest difference. Lighting is a perfect example—simple updates can transform your space without breaking the bank.
One of the best, most cost-effective ways to upgrade your lighting is to search for smaller light sources: lamps, sconces, candles, and more. These do more than space out the lighting in your home: they also add a unique, personal touch.
You can usually find these types of light fixtures secondhand. If you get crafty, you could even fix up some thrifted light fixtures to fit your taste, whether that means a deep clean or a fresh coat of paint.

When adding or upgrading your home’s lighting, it’s essential to think about placement: the height and location of lamps, candles, sconces, etc. Placing lighting at different levels can add dimension and create a cozy atmosphere in your space.
A floor lamp is a great option, high enough up to illuminate your space without turning on the overhead lights. Moreover, you could add smaller lamps or candles to counters, tables, and bookshelves. This will lower the lighting slightly and create a warm, inviting atmosphere. It will also draw attention to those areas, so consider placing these smaller lights in areas you want to highlight.
No matter what lighting fixtures you have, customization is key to sprucing up your space and adding a unique touch of you. Evelina Kravaev-Söderberg, head of design and creative at H&M HOME, points out some possibilities:
“Table lamps are incredibly versatile—use a ceramic base and change the lampshade to allow for variety in color, patterns, and material texture.”
Get creative with colors, textures, and materials—this is a simple, cost-effective way to change up your home and add personality to your space.
Whether you’re hoping to impress potential buyers or simply to upgrade your space, lighting can make a huge difference—and it doesn’t need to be expensive.
